MANGALURU: Dakshina Kannada has 17,58,647 voters, who will decide the fate of candidates from eight assembly segments in the district on May 10.

“Since the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) is in force, public and political parties have to obtain permission from the returning officers or assistant returning officers to hold meetings, religious programmes, political meetings and campaigns.
Flying squads, static surveillance teams (60 each), sector officer teams (184), video surveillance teams (24), and MCC nodal officers have already started functioning to implement the MCC in eight constituencies,” the DC said.
“Social media monitoring cell also has been activated to monitor and act against the sharing of hate contents. People may dial toll-free number ‘1950’ at the 24×7 control room that has been opened at the DC office, to register their complaints regarding MCC violations. People also may submit complaints with photos and videos on cVIGIL mobile app of the election commission,” he said.
City police commissioner Kuldeep Kumar R Jain said that eight companies of paramilitary force, comprising 120 personnel each, will be arriving in the district on April 1. “Besides this, the local police and the state reserve police forces will also be deployed to maintain law and order in the eight constituencies.
We have already externed 25 persons and booked two persons under the Goonda Act. Stringent action will be taken against those who violate laws,” he said. Superintendent of Police Dr Vikram Amathe said that 11 persons were externed from the Dakshina Kannada police limits.
Counting in NITK
The counting of votes for the eight constituencies will be held at the National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal, the DC said. “We have already identified buildings for strong rooms and counting stations at the NITK campus. The Election Commission has already taken the premises into its possession,” he said.
