KOLKATA: An 18-year-old youth from Bhowanipore, out on a fun ride with friends, died and three of his friends were injured when the car they were riding rammed a median divider and turned turtle on Salt Lake Bypass on Sunday. The accident took place after the driver failed to negotiate a sharp curve near AL-BL blocks.
The deceased, Rajveer Singh Kohli, was sitting next to the driver. He suffered severe neck injuries along with multiple internal injuries even though he had his seatbelt strapped on. One of his friends tried to administer CPR on him before police reached the spot and took them to Bidhannagar subdivisional hospital, where Kohli was declared dead and others – Vansh Agarwal, Om Shaw and the young man at the wheel Danish Shabbir – were offered emergency medication.

Witnesses said the car, a nine-year-old hatchback, was being driven at a very high speed when the accident happened around 10.30pm. “The car was moving at a breakneck speed.
It rammed the median divider and flew into the other lane. It turned turtle and the occupants, with help from the passersby, tried to crawl out of the car. The driver was injured but the tall youth sitting next to him wasn’t responsive,” said Manas Kumar Jana, a witness.
Witnesses said there were five occupants in the car, including a woman. A motorist who had stopped after the accident, volunteered to carry the unresponsive youth – Kohli – and another boy in his car to the nearest government hospital as cops escorted them in another vehicle.
While Kohli was the youngest, the three others are in the age range of 19 and 20 and are all residents of Bhowanipore. The woman hadn’t come to the hospital and police have little information on her. Police said the car was registered with Shabbir’s father, who is a doctor. Shabbir is still under treatment at a private hospital.
“The driver is in the hospital and others are in trauma. We are yet to speak to them about the accident. However, we are scanning the CCTV footage and a case has been initiated,” said a senior officer of Bidhannagar City police. Cops are checking if the men were drunk or if they were speeding. Cops are also checking if the driver had a valid licence.
