Seven people were arrested on Sunday for allegedly smuggling more than 500kg of marijuana from Odisha and planning to distribute it in colleges and universities in Noida, Ghaziabad and Delhi. Contraband worth over 1.5 crore in the international market has been recovered from the suspects, said police officers on Monday.

According to SM Khan, deputy commissioner of police (Greater Noida), police received a tip-off that a big consignment would arrive in the city on Sunday night.

“On Sunday night, a pickup truck was intercepted by a police team at a vacant plot in Sigma-1, Greater Noida. There were three men in the truck and they were meeting four other people at the plot. Upon checking, a consignment of 502kg of marijuana was found inside the truck. The smugglers had hidden the contraband behind metal sheets inside the truck,” said Khan.

The suspects, Mohd Azad, Fayyaz, Rishiram, Sajan Shah, Yogesh Yadav, Rajkumar Shah and a woman whose identity has been withheld, were booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and produced before the court on Monday, said officers.

Three vehicles – a pickup truck, a cantor truck and a two-wheeler, which were used to transport the drugs – were recovered from the possessions of the suspects, said officers.

“The consignment was being taken to two godowns in Bahlolpur village and Bisrakh village. The woman suspect and her son Fayaz were operating this group from Noida. They placed the order for the consignment online. Rishi Ram and Azad were involved in distribution while the other three suspects were involved in transportation logistics,” said the officer.

Khan added, “The group has a local distribution network through which these drugs were being sold to students living in paying guest accommodations, hostels of colleges and universities in and around Noida, Greater Noida, Delhi and Ghaziabad. They were also being sold to working professionals here.”
