PUNE: Thane, Pune and Nagpur districts have registered maximum additional voters in the special summary revision of electoral rolls. The final electoral roll was published on Thursday following a month-long intensified drive by the Election Commission of India (ECI) from November 9 to December 8.

Pune district with 79 lakh voters, Mumbai suburbs with 71 lakh and Thane with 62 lakh recorded the maximum number of electors in the final tally in the state. The net addition to the final tally has taken the total number of voters in the state’s electoral roll to 9.02 crore. Mumbai has around 96 lakh voters, of which over 71 lakh are in the suburbs and more than 24 lakh in the island city.
“This year, the month-long drive generated a lot of response from metro cities, with Thane, Pune and Nagpur leading the tally. They were followed by Mumbai suburbs, Nashik, Solapur and Palghar. There were about 9 lakh additional names and about 4 lakh applications for deletion, taking the total net addition to 4.43 lakh,” said state chief electoral officer Shrikant Deshpande.
The drive was launched to encourage citizens to register online on the election website or on the voters’ app. Even as a total of 4.43 lakh voters have been added to the draft electoral roll, the addition of names in the age group of 18-19 years and 20-29 years has been lower than expected, said the state chief electoral officer.
The additions have come mainly from Pune and Mumbai city due to special efforts taken in these districts to reach out to youths in schools and colleges. A total of 2.30 lakh voters in the age group of 18-19 years were added in the state, with about 20,327 names from Pune followed by 19,394 names from Thane district and 13,547 names from Mumbai suburbs.
This time, there was a special feature to collect advance applications from those completing 18 years on 1 October, an official said. A total of over 30,000 advance forms were collected in the state. These will be processed and the names will appear in the supplementary voters list.
While most districts have registered addition of voters, the migration of voters to the city areas has resulted in deletions of names of many electors in some districts after due checks and verification.
Altogether 15,039 names were deleted from Yavatmal district and 11,547 names from Bhandara district owing to largescale migration to other cities, especially Mumbai and Pune, said election officials. The other districts that registered more deletions were Jalgaon, Wardha, Ratnagiri, among others.
The deletion process was carried out by following due process and after checks and visits by booth level officers, said election officials.
