Jayakwadi dam, which is filled to 90% of its capacity, has been witnessing release of water

AURANGABAD: The cumulative storage in the 964 different dams in Marathwada was around 157 TMC by Monday evening — which was over 60% live storage capacity. These reservoirs were holding only 37% live storage during the corresponding period last year.
Stating that the water stock in different major dams and other reservoirs in the region has already reached sufficient levels to cater to drinking water and other needs, authorities at Godavari Marathwada Irrigation Development Corporation (GMIDC) said the dam levels were expected to go up further over the remaining rainy season.
“As per the official forecast, we expect more rain in August and September and later during the withdrawal phase of the monsoon. Besides catering to needs of drinking water, we will be able to supply water to rabi and hot weather crops along with to different industrial needs,” Jaising Hire, the assistant engineer of Command Area Development Authority of GMIDC, said.
As per official record, three out of 11 key major projects in the region — Jayakwadi dam (90%) in Aurangabad district, and Vishnupuri dam (68%) and Lower Manar dam (100%) in Nanded district — have been witnessing release of water.
Among other total 45 major irrigation projects from the region, Majalgaon dam and Manjra dam from Beed district were holding 45% and 39% live storage respectively whereas Lower Terna dam and Sina Kolegaon dam from Osmanabad district was showing 66% and 23% live storage respectively.
GMIDC authorities said Manjra dam that supplies water to Latur and Sina Kolegaon dam were showing better storage as compared to last year. Among other major dams, Yeldari dam (69%) and Lower Dudhna dam (67%) from Parbhni district, Sidhheshwar dam (73%) from Hingoli district and Upper Penganga dam (92%) that serves to Nanded district were also holding sufficient storage.
A total of 81 medium projects from Marathwada were having 49% live storage as compared to 25% live storage reported last year. Total 838 small irrigation projects from the region were also having better live storage of 33% as against 16% storage during corresponding period last year.
