MANGALURU: Where there’s a will there’s a way, goes the saying and one needn’t look any further than this septuagenarian to realise the truth behind the adage!
At the age of 79, Prabhakar Kuppahalli received his PhD in material science during the 41st annual convocation of Mangalore University on Wednesday – vindicating his firm belief that age isn’t an impediment to one’s quest for knowledge.
Prabhakar, a visiting faculty member at Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering, Bengaluru, and with a teaching career spanning over four decades, had enrolled for his PhD at the same college, affiliated with Mangalore University. “It was my long-cherished dream that I get a PhD,” said Kuppahalli.
Though I had planned to do so while I was working in the US during my younger days, it did not materialise due to unavoidable circumstances. But when I turned 75, I decided to give it a try. In 2017, I enrolled for a PhD in material science and after five years, I finally fulfilled my dream,” said Prabhakar, whose wife Pushpa Prabha is a homemaker and his son an IT professional.
He said his PhD wouldn’t have been possible without support from his guide, R Keshavmurthy, who is a professor in the department of mechanical engineering at the college. “It was Keshavmurthy who pushed me hard to pursue my dream,” said Prabhakar, who currently guides undergraduate and postgraduate students in research.
Born on March 1, 1944, he received his engineering degree from IISc Bangalore in 1966. He worked at IIT Bombay for a few years, before moving to the US. He completed his masters from University of Pittsburgh in 1976 and worked there for 15 years, before moving back to India.
