KOLKATA: The death of a 10-year-old kid due to dengue in Collin Street has brought to fore how an area, nearly a few hundred metres from Park Street, has become a cause of concern after repeated cases being reported from there.
A humble residence at the end of the serpentine Syed Ismail Lane off Collin Street plunged into grief on Sunday afternoon. Occasional sobs could be heard from inside the Ansari family home. Only a couple of days ago, the family lost its only child — 10 year-old Aman Ali Ansari, who battled with dengue for nearly a week.

“My son had fever last Monday and had to be admitted to hospital on Wednesday. His condition improved a bit in between, but started to deteriorate again since Friday,” recounted Aman’s father Iyad Ali Ansari.
Residential units, thickly packed in and around Kalanga Jama Masjid, reported cases of dengue over the past few weeks. “The area is relatively clean and people maintain hygiene. Yet cases of dengue refuse to subside,” said Md Shahid Ansari, a local. Ansari was detected with malaria a month ago. Two more members in his family had dengue after that.
“Most of the residents use mosquito nets. They clean the garbage on a regular basis and we don’t have stored water inside houses. Most households use mosquito repellent coils throughout the day. But there is no respite from the deadly fever,” said Md Riyaz. His two kids were also detected with dengue two weeks ago.
Local councillor Susmita Bhattacharyya said a special drive was conducted in and around Kalanga Jama mosque on Sunday after the boy’s death. “We conduct regular drives to give residents respite from the winged menace. Now after the death of the boy who had recently come to Kolkata from Jharkhand with fever, we have become more cautious,” said the councillor on Sunday.
However, a section of local residents pointed fingers at storage of scrap materials in pockets of Collin Street and accumulation of wastes that need regular cleaning. Several scrap dealers have lined up their shops near Collin Street. Tyres and old furniture were stacked one over the other. large pieces of thermocol, mainly used for packing stuff, are lying scattered inside the damp and dingy bylanes, said a resident.
“We will keep a vigil on Park Street and adjacent areas as Collin Street is located nearby,” said an official.
