While the incident occurred on Monday night, the police picked up vital leads from the video clip and arrested Swapnil Gaikwad (22), Deepak Handge (19) and Amankumar Gautam (22) – all from Jadhavwadi in Chikhali on Tuesday. Sub-inspector Sachin Chavan and his team also recovered smartphone worth Rs20,000 from the trio, besides seizing the scooter used in the crime.
Victim Raja Shaikh (20), a plumber from West Bengal, sustained injuries in theattack, police said.
Chavan told TOI that around 10.30pm on Monday, Shaikh was walking to a housing society when three men on a scooter stopped him and told him to hand over his smartphone. “The trio picked up stones and hurled at him. They snatched his smartphone and drove away,” he said.
Chavan said that a man from a neighbouring building provided a video clip. “On scrutiny, we found that one of the rear view mirrors of the scooter was broken. We then received information that a person from Jadhavwadi was using a scooter of a similar make. The owner of the vehicle said his son Swapnil Gaikwad had been using it. Swapnil admitted his involvement in the robbery and revealed the names of his accomplices during questioning,” he said.
