It does seem like online classes and events are here to stay for a while. With the pandemic showing no signs of ending, most people have been relying on online tools for classes and events. Keeping this in mind, Apple has said that certain apps catering to these demands will not have to pay the mandatory 30% App Store fees. On the official Apple Developers’ website, the company noted, “As the world continues to recover from the pandemic, we’d like to support the communities that are still providing digital services in place of in-person group events by extending the deadline further to December 31, 2021.”
It was last year when in order to to support apps that adapted services from in-person to digital due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Apple had temporarily deferred the requirement to offer paid online group event services. The deadline was till June 2021 but Apple has now extended it further by six months.
Apple has also clarified which apps fall under the category. The offer will be only for apps “offering realtime person-to-person services between two individuals (for example, tutoring students, medical consultations, real estate tours, or fitness training) to use purchase methods other than in-app purchase.”
Not all apps have to pay the mandatory 30% cut to Apple though. In January 2021, Apple announced the App Store Small Business program. Developers can qualify for the program and a reduced, 15 percent commission if they earned up to $1 million during the last calendar year.
The App Store’s standard commission rate of 30 percent remains in place for apps selling digital goods and services and making more than $1 million in proceeds, defined as a developer’s post-commission earnings.
