KOLKATA: The city on Friday braved the coldest winter day since 2018 as the mercury slid to 10.9° Celsius on the back of strong Northwesterly winds.
This is also the third lowest minimum temperature recorded in the city since 2013, when the mercury had plunged to 9° Celsius. In 2018, the lowest temperature recorded was 10.5° Celsius.

The cold spell will last at least a week as the steady flow of cold Northwesterly wind brings in chill from the Himalayan region, the Met office said. The northern states as well as Delhi, UP and Bihar through which the wind system passes are also under the grip of a cold wave.
Friday’s minimum of 10.9° Celsius was three notches below normal, the chill aggravated by the two-degree drop from Thursday’s 12.7° Celsius. The maximum temperature, too, was three degrees below normal at 21.9° Celsius.
“Friday’s minimum temperature is the lowest since 2018. The Northwesterly wind, blowing in from J&K and Himachal where the mercury is currently sub-zero, has pushed the temperature down here. Adding to this is the absence of fog and less humidity,” said GK Das director (weather) at Regional Meteorological Centre Kolkata.
The city on Friday witnessed the coldest day of the season at 10.9° Celsius but the mercury is unlikely to plunge further, the Met department has said. “However, since the temperature will continue to remain below the normal mark, the cold spell will stay for now,” said G K Das, director (weather), at Regional Meteorological Centre.
The Met office expects a marginal increase in temperature next week but the rise will not be significant enough to make a difference in the chill factor.
“The higher the intensity of the wind the lower the temperature will get. The Northwesterly wind is likely to slow down from Monday and hence we expect a slight rise in the mercury. However, the cold spell will continue because the temperature will remain below normal,” Das said.
The mercury also nosedived below 10° Celsius in others parts of the state including Purulia, Sriniketan, Burdwan and Bankura.
