GURUGRAM: A 56-year-old man was chased, dragged on the road and beaten to death by three men in an alleged road rage in the congested Trunk Market in the Sadar Bazar area on Monday evening. The victim was on his way home in Subhash Nagar on a two-wheeler and had asked a cargo auto-rickshaw driver to move his vehicle that was blocking the road when he was attacked by the latter and his two accomplices.
The incident, which was caught on a CCTV camera installed in a shop nearby, shows how the accused chased the victim, Mool Chand Verma, for nearly 50 metres after a brawl over parking, then dragged him back to his auto-rickshaw and showered punches and kicks on him along with two others in the crowded street but nobody came to his help. Police have obtained the footage and are questioning nearby shopkeepers to ascertain the chain of events. They have also arrested the cargo auto-rickshaw driver, the prime accused, and booked him for culpable homicide not amounting to murder under IPC Section 304 (II).
The victim’s son, who submitted a complaint in the matter, said his father was murdered in his own backyard but nobody came to help him. “Ghar me hi murder hua hai. Police must investigate the case properly to arrest all the accused for murder,” Verma’s son Yogesh told TOI. The crime spot is barely 10 minutes from their home. According to the FIR, the incident took place around 7.15 pm on Monday in front of a grocery shop near the Trunk Market on Gurdwara road when Verma was returning home on a scooter.
“In the evening, I received a call that my father was lying unconscious in front of a grocery store. I reached the spot and immediately rushed him to a private hospital, where doctors declared him dead,” he said.
According to the complainant, the cargo auto-rickshaw was initially moving in front of Verma’s two-wheeler on the congested road. The auto allegedly had abruptly stopped in front of the store, blocking his father’s scooter.
“My father had asked the auto driver to move his vehicle aside so that he could pass but it seemed to have enraged the auto driver. The man came out of his vehicle and chased my father for a short distance. He then dragged him back towards his auto and started beating him. Two more persons also joined the auto driver and thrashed my father,” Yogesh told police in his written complaint.
The two other accused have been identified as the owner of a shop for which the cargo auto carries goods and his son. The father-son duo, police said, is currently on the run.
Inspector Ved Pal, the SHO of the city police station, said the auto driver, identified as Arvind Kumar, has been arrested. “We are conducting raids to nab other accused. We have learnt that the victim had high blood pressure and there are possibilities that he died due to a sudden attack on him. Currently, we are waiting for the autopsy reports to ascertain the cause of death,” he said.
