BENGALURU: Sleuths from the Enforcement Directorate (ED), probing the Ballari illegal mining scam, said that one of the accused, identified as K Mahesh alias Kharadapudi Mahesh, along with his siblings, was responsible for a Rs 103.85 crore loss to the state exchequer through the alleged unlawful practice.
The Ballari illegal mining scam had rocked the state 15 years ago and resulted in the downfall of many a political stalwart. The scam broke out in 2010 and the probe was handed over to the CBI in 2013. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was also formed to probe the matter.
K Mahesh, a close associate of former BJP minister G Janardhana Reddy, was a key operator, handling transportation of ore from its origin to ports in Goa, Mangaluru and Belekeri. Now, ED has provisionally attached properties worth around Rs 54 crore of Mahesh, his siblings and other family members.
An ED press release said: “Illegally mined iron ore was transported and traded by the main accused K Mahesh and his brothers, K Govindaraj, K Sadashiva and K Kumar, with the help of their associates, without valid permits or on the basis of fake and forged permits to the tune of Rs 62.92 crore.”
