MANGALURU: Banners and flex boards warning of boycotting polls ahead of the upcoming assembly elections has become a trend to pressurise people’s representatives and officials in Dakshina Kannada district.
Many organisations and groups in villages have been putting up banners and flex boards demanding roads, footpaths, street lights, water supply, electricity connections etc – to grab attention of MLAs and officials. People in many villages of Belthangady, Puttur, Kadaba, Sullia, Bantwal, Moodbidri and Mangaluru have put up banners and flex boards announcing that they will boycott assembly elections if their demands are not fulfilled.
In most of the cases, people in interior places have been demanding proper road connectivity. For instance, a banner was found at Bolubailu in Sullia taluk wherein people of Katoor demanded basic amenities to their village. “Embarrassed over the apathy towards development of Katoor on part of the administrative centres, we are boycotting the upcoming election,” reads a banner put up by the aggrieved villagers of Katoor.
Meanwhile, villagers of Kandlaje, Nagri and Sharavoor of Alankar village in Puttur are demanding better roads for their villages. They also have put up a banner warning poll boycott if their demands are not met before the election. “We have been demanding officials and people’s representatives for concrete roads in our villages. However, they have not responded to our demands, forcing us to take a decision to boycott polls,” said a villager from Kandlaje.
Dakshina Kannada ZP CEO Kumar said that teams of officials are being sent to convince people who warn of poll boycott under the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) activity.
“We have already taken up several minor development works based on the poll boycott calls given by people in many places. We have been attending all such grievances on priority if their demands are within the framework of our jurisdiction. However, there are limitations that we cannot fulfil some of their demands. For example, people of Puttur have been demanding the construction of a railway overbridge, which needs approval from the Railways,” Kumar said.
“People’s demand for major projects that require huge amounts of sanctions can be taken up only with the government’s approval. We have been sending teams of officials under the SVEEP activity to convince people and ensure their electoral participation,” he added.
