BENGALURU: Despite multiple deadlines and announcements by the previous government on opening of 438 Namma Clinics in Karnataka, including 243 in Bengaluru, over a dozen such facilities are still to be launched in Bengaluru city.
The authorities plan to open the 18 clinics in a month, which will fulfil the aim of having one per ward. Inspired by Delhi’s Mohalla Clinics, Namma Clinics are meant to offer a range of free testing and consultation facilities at the ward level.
On December 14, 2022, the then health minister K Sudhakar announced that all 438 Namma Clinics would be launched by the end of January. Each was to have one doctor, one nursing staffer, one lab technician and one D-group worker. Several healthcare packages, including antenatal, postnatal care, adolescent care, immunisation, family planning, fertility, communicable diseases management, general and minor injuries, preventive care for NCDs, oral care, eyecare, ENT, mental health, geriatric care and laboratory services, were to be offered. Tele-consultation, wellness activities like yoga and referral services were also meant to be available through the clinics.
BBMP health commissioner KV Trilok Chandra told STOI 225 clinics are operational in Bengaluru and the remaining 18 will open in a month. Finalising the locations and construction work delayed them, Chandra said, adding that the existing clinics have regular doctors, and only 50 clinics have postgraduates from medical colleges who under NMC are supposed to take up a district residency programme.
