Below normal rain in store for most of Maharashtra for a week | Pune News – Times of India

PUNE: Barring a short heavy rain spell in parts of Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra on July 23-24 and in isolated areas of Vidarbha on July 23-25, monsoon scenario over most parts of Maharashtra will be quite uneventful till at least around August 4, an extended range forecast of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) hinted on Thursday.
Unlike the heavy to very heavy rainfall experienced in Maharashtra a few days ago, a good portion of the state, including Konkan, is likely to witness below normal rain during the next one week, the forecast showed.

Anupam Kashyapi, head of weather forecasting division, IMD, Pune, told TOI, “Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada and western parts of Vidarbha are likely to get near normal or marginally below normal rains from July 22-28, while Konkan may see below normal rainfall during this period. However, only during July 23-24, isolated parts of Konkan Madhya Maharashtra and during July 23-25, isolated parts of Vidarbha have a yellow warning (heavy rains at isolated spots), though rainfall in districts like Pune, Solapur, Sangli, Satara among others is likely to be moderate as per the Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai.”
Kashyapi said all the regions of the country that had not received good rainfall during the earlier part of July are now getting some heavy to very heavy spells. This also includes regions in northwest India. The monsoon trough at mean sea level is shifted towards north and now near its normal position. This, as well as other factors (viz disappearance of off shore trough and shear zone at 20°N), has caused monsoon rainfall to reduce over Maharashtra, he said.
“Though the monsoon is very likely to shift gradually northwards, some other systems that caused heavy rain in parts of Maharashtra a few days ago, such as the off shore trough and the east west shear zone, have either reduced in intensity or disappeared. Thus, apart for an isolated heavy spell forecast for parts of Maharashtra on July 23-24, monsoon rain is likely to be less than normal over parts of the state during the remainder of July,” Kashyapi said.
He said monsoon would be partially active till July-end in Maharashtra. It may, however, not be vigorous, Kashyapi added.
He said for Pune city as well, light rain has been hinted during the next few days, with partly cloudy to generally cloudy condition to continue. Though the city might see an increase in clouding from July 23 to 25, moderate rain chances would be less, he said.
Kashyapi said the upcoming isolated heavy rain spell over Madhya Maharashtra and Konkan on July 23-25 would occur because of the wind pattern changing for a brief period. “Westerly winds are likely to become stronger again during that period,” he said.
