BENGALURU: Nearly four months after electrification of Yelahanka-Devanahalli-Chikkaballapur section was commissioned, South Western Railway decided to run Memu services to and from Kempegowda International Airport halt station from Friday.
SWR announced five pairs of unreserved Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (Memu) express trains from KSR Bengaluru City/KSR Bengaluru Cantonment to KIA halt station: 06531/06532 KSR Bengaluru City-Devanahalli-KSR Bengaluru Memu, 06533/06534 Devanahalli-Yelahanka-Devanahalli, 06535/06536 Devanahalli-Cantonment-Devanahalli, 06537/06538 Devanahalli-Cantonment – Devanahalli and 06539/06540 Devanahalli-Yelahanka-Devanahalli. “Frequency of the eight-car Memu services will be six days a week; there will be no train on Sunday,” read an SWR statement.
The Memu trains are expected to be a huge relief as app-based cabs to and from KIA are unreliable and exorbitant. BMTC Vayu Vajra’s average fare is around Rs 230. Memu trains, on the other hand, will be cheaper (Rs 30-Rs 35) for passengers, especially those travelling alone or with light luggage, even though frequency of services is less.
Manju Nair, a passenger between Doddajala and Chikkaballapur, said: “These trains should be extended till Chikkaballapur. They have no stops at stations like Bettahalsoor and Doddajala, which are used by many passengers.”
KN Krishna Prasad, railway activist and member of Karnataka Railway Vedike, an NGO, felt these Memu services are not very useful as only one train is provided from KSR Bengaluru City.
Rajkumar Dugar, a commuter rail activist, said: “These Memu services are much required. Services should be run according to the requirements of BIAL and also ensure punctuality. Doddajala halt station should be upgraded to a crossing station so they could run more trains at a higher frequency”.
The halt station, located 3.5km from the KIA terminal, was built by BIAL at a cost of around Rs 3 crore and was inaugurated on January 4, 2021. The station was aimed to help 28,000 airport employees as well as passengers.BIAL also operates free shuttle bus services between the station and terminal as per the train timings.
