A magisterial court has sent the domestic help in police custody remand till May 24.
In her statement to the police, Bhosale (66) stated that the event was held at the lawns of her bungalow on the evening of May 14 and went on a couple of hours past midnight. After this, she had wrapped her necklace, four bangles and three rings (all diamond-studded) in a handkerchief and kept them on a dressing table in her bedroom. On May 17, she realised that she had forgotten to keep the jewellery in her safe and reached the dressing table only to realise that the handkerchief was there but the jewellery was missing.
Bhosale told TOI on Friday, “After questioning all domestic helps, I conducted a thorough search in my bedroom and others places, but I could not find the jewellery. I finally approached the police on Thursday to lodge a complaint, as I strongly suspect one of my domestic helps, who had access to my room, of having committed the theft. We are extending all possible help and are co-operating with the police in conducting the investigation.”
Assistant inspector Vijaykumar Shinde of Hadapsar police said, “We have arrested the domestic help on the basis of Bhosale’s complaint. The woman suspect has not confessed to her involvement in the jewellery theft as of now, but we are questioning her.”
Deputy commissioner of police (zone-V) Namrata Patil said five domestic helps work in the bungalow. “The woman named in the complaint was responsible for cleaning the bedroom, dressing table and other related jobs in the Bhosale household. While other domestic helps do different jobs. Bhosale inquired with the suspect about her stolen jewellery but she denied her involvement in the crime. We will be focussing on people having access to the former mayor’s bedroom,” she said.
