KOLKATA: A 35-year-old Salt Lake resident, Raghunath Kumar Yadav, walking towards a local shop to buy groceries while talking to a family member over phone, was targeted by two bike-borne snatchers who fled with his mobile. The accused also tried to take his gold chain and wallet, but failed.
According to cops, the incident was reported around 7.45am on Monday from in front of the CJ Block swimming pool. Cops said they are at an advanced stage in identifying the two-wheeler used for the snatching, and are tracing the identity of the accused.
Yadav, originally from Giridih in Jharkhand, said the phone – worth Rs 20,000 – had been bought for his car business. “I stepped out to buy bread from the nearby market.
I was busy talking on the phone and did not realize two men on a bike were pulling up behind me. The youths lunged at my phone and chain. They managed to take the phone easily as I was taken by surprise. I tried running after them while yelling for help, but it was impossible to stop the bike,” said Yadav.
“I used to drive app cabs, but settled here thinking this was a safe place. I have seen gold chains being snatched back home, but never heard of such instances here. It came as a shock that the phone was snatched barely 300m from my house,” he said.
The police said they are working on leads and are certain that some petty criminals were involved. “We are taking this incident seriously, and are checking CCTV footage,” said an officer. Cops have circulated photographs and the registration number of the bike across all police stations.
The incident came barely two weeks after a bike-taxi rider registered with multiple app-based aggregator platforms was arrested on charges of snatching in Salt Lake. He was also wanted at multiple police stations in Kolkata.
