THANE: A biker and his pillion rider died after they were thrown off Thane’s Castle Mill flyover, falling nearly 25ft on the road below early on Tuesday.
Police said the biker apparently lost control of the two-wheeler and rammed it into the concrete crash barrier of the bridge. Police suspect that they could have been drunk; their test reports are awaited.
The incident occurred around 3.30am on the Thane-bound carriageway of the flyover, said Avinash Sawant of the regional disaster management cell.
Rabodi police said Thane resident P V More (21) and Ulhasnagar resident R B Gupta (26), who worked at a local supermarket, were travelling from Manpada to Thane station. “They were probably drunk and could have lost control of the vehicle and dashed into the side barrier wall,” said senior inspector Santosh Ghatekar of Rabodi police station. “The impact of the collision was such that the two men were flung nearly 25-30ft on the road below the bridge. We found the bike at one corner of the flyover.” The rescue officials rushed More and Gupta to hospital, where they were both declared dead.
Police have registered an accidental death case and may book the rider after ascertaining who was riding the bike, said Ghatekar.
