KOLKATA: The Centre on Thursday appointed Justice T S Sivagnanam, the senior-most judge of the Calcutta High Court, as the HC acting chief justice. Justice Sivagnanam was born in 1963. In 1986, he enrolled as a lawyer with the Tamil Nadu Bar Council. He became a judge in 2009 and was made a permanent HC judge in 2011.
The Supreme Court Collegium had on February 9 recommended the appointment of Justice Sivagnanam as Calcutta High Court chief justice. Chief Justice Prakash Shrivastava, who had joined the HC in October 2021, has retired.
Chief Justice Shrivastava, in his farewell speech on Thursday, said he was proud to be part of this high court and remembered the support of his family to help him face the pressures which come with the office of the chief justice. He said whether he succeeded in his work will be determined by how well he is remembered by the HC lawyers.
