KOLKATA: A 53-year-old Tangra resident who had tested Covid-19 positive during his cancer treatment died on January 7, making it the first reported Covid death in the state this year. The state health department, however, has not updated it as Covid death in its bulletin. Therefore, on official record, there has been no Covid death this month.
According to the family of the deceased, Girish Chandra Das, the 53-year-old was a patient of multiple myeloma and had been battling the cancer for some time. He was admitted to ESI Hospital in Sealdah about three weeks ago for his cancer treatment.
As his condition deteriorated, Das was shifted to ESI Hospital in Budge Budge where he was undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit. He was found Covid-19 positive during his treatment.
“He was admitted to the hospital for treatment of multiple myeloma and during treatment, he was found to be Covid-19 positive,” said a family member.
The patient was shifted to Beliaghata ID hospital on January 5 in a critical condition. Sources said the result of rapid antigen test on the samples of the patient at the time of admission showed positive result.The hospital sent another sample the next day to ICMR-NICED for RT-PCR test. The result, which came on January 7, the day the patient died, threw up negative result.
The last time the state health department recorded a Covid death officially was on December 20, which was also the lone Covid casualty that month, when 149 fresh cases were reported. In November, the state had logged 446 fresh cases and four deaths.
