KOLKATA: Even as Bengal recorded 745 new Covid cases on Thursday – the highest single-day spike since January 21 when the state had clocked 406 cases – private hospitals in Kolkata rushed to bring back Covid wards that had been opened up for non-Covid patients since the third wave ebbed in February. Four private hospitals reintroduced exclusive Covid units on Thursday and at least three other facilities are on the verge of reopening their Covid wards.
Thursday’s spike was a sharp one from just 295 new cases recorded a day ago. Along with new cases, the positivity rate, too, leapt to 7.3% from a mere 4.8% on Wednesday. Covid cases touched three digits for the first time during the post-third wave period on June 10 when the number of daily new cases touched 107.

Peerless Hospital on Thursday opened a 40-bed Covid ward that had been thrown open for non-Covid treatment in February. The hospital has nine Covid patients admitted at the ward currently apart from one at its ITU which has got eight beds reserved for Covid-positive patients. “There has been a sudden spurt in admissions and a ward is now necessary to maintain isolation. Most of our patients, however, have mild Covid symptoms and more serious co-morbidities, apart from one who is admitted in ITU. If the number of admissions keep rising, we might reserve more ITU beds for Covid,” said Peerless Hospital CEO Sudipto Mitra.
RN Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences (RTIICS), which had no Covid patients till Wednesday but got four within 24 hours, set up an eight-bed Covid ward and a six-bed Covid ICU on Thursday. “All four of our patients have severe comorbidities which have been worsened by Covid. A couple are renal failure patients who tested positive on admission. All are immuno-compromised and their Covid needs to be controlled immediately,” said RTIICS zonal head R Venkatesh.
Medica Superspecialty Hospital has reserved a 10-bed ITU unit for Covid. The hospital currently has three Covid patients. “Three of our patients admitted in non-Covid sections turned positive. If the number crosses 10, then we will open a full ward,” said chairperson Alok Roy.
Charnock Hospital, that had no Covid patient till Tuesday, has three admitted now. It has opened a seven-bed Covid ward, including an ICU. “The numbers are rising and we now need a separate ward,” said Charnock MD Prashant Sharma.
Woodlands Hospitals, which has seven patients admitted now, has doubled its Covid unit capacity to 12 beds.
AMRI Hospitals, which has 15 Covid patients admitted across its three units, could soon open a Covid ward. “We had nine patients till earlier this week and the number is rising. Our Covid task force is monitoring the situation,” said AMRI CEO Rupak Barua.
Most Covid patients during the current spurt will be “incidental” for whom Covid will not be the major illness, said CMRI Hospital pulmonology director Raja Dhar.
