Caste-based names of over 2,900 roads and settlements changed in Nashik division | Nashik News – Times of India


NASHIK: The names of more than 2,900 caste-specific roads, mansions and settlements have been changed in Nashik division so far and the rest will be changed soon, said divisional commissioner Radhakrishna Game.
The exercise is part of the social welfare department’s important decision to change the names of roads, places and settlements in the state that are based on ‘castes’ and instead give names associated with towering personalities of the country or those associated with democratic values.
“This is having social changes among the people living in the areas as it has changed the way of looking at these settlements,” the officer said.
Of the 2,904 villages, settlements who caste-based names were changed across five districts of Nashik division, 169 were in the areas of five municipal corporations, 266 were in the municipal area and 2,469 localities were in the gram panchayat area (village).
Nashik division has five districts – Nashik, Dhule, Ahmednagar, Nandurbar and Jalgaon.
Also reviewing the works undertaken for the welfare of the third gender persons, the divisional commissioner directed the authorities to provide training skills to the people under the various government schemes and provide them the identity cards by holding camps for the beneficiaries.
