AURANGABAD: Former Maharashtra CM and senior Congress leader Ashok Chavan on Monday said he was being spied on, attempts were being made to defame him through forgery of his official letterheads and also expressed fear for his life.
Chavan met Nanded additional SP Abinash Kumar with his complaint stating that his letterhead and signature were being forged to create a rift between communities. He said the content under the forged letterhead had text related to then CM Uddhav Thackeray and Maratha reservation.
When contacted, Kumar said, “We have received the complaint and initiated an investigation. The security of Chavan is being reviewed afresh and appropriate measures are being taken.”
Chavan later addressed a public event at Karegaon Phata in Dharmabad tehsil of Nanded district where he said some people are conspiring to eliminate him.
Speaking in Pune, CM Eknath Shinde said, “An in-depth investigation should be carried out in this issue. I personally spoke to the DGP.”
Chavan said, “Some people are conspiring to ensure that I also meet the fate of [Shivsangram Party leader and former MLC] Vinayak Mete. I would like to tell the conspirators that unlike them, I do not shield myself with lies. Everybody has the right to be in politics. But this is a new low in politics.” Mete died in an accident on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway last year. His supporters had expressed suspicion over the accident leading to his death.
Chavan said,”They have forged my letterhead, edited the content and are trying to mislead that I am against the Maratha community and their reservation. I have lodged a complaint with the police and requested them to find out the conspirators.”
He said, “No one knows how many such forged letters the conspirators will come up with for targeting me. They are keeping an eye on my movement and also the people I am meeting… Some of the letterheads are from during my term as the PWD minister. Earlier, I had met the superintendent of police. Based on my complaint, a probe is on since January 31.” Superintendent of police Shrikrishna Kokate confirmed the probe, but refused to divulge further details.
