KOLKATA: The rake management system (RMS) in the Chennai-Kolkata stretch has gone for a toss, following the triple derailment at Balasore and the 51-hour closure of the trunk route.

Balasore accident

Though a few long-distance trains took the usual path via Balasore after Sunday night, train movement was not streamlined in the next 24 hours and around 85 trains were cancelled on Monday. This was only five less than those cancelled immediately after the accident. Things are likely to improve by Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning, railway officials said.
Among the cancelled trains on Monday was 12839 Howrah-Chennai Mail, which had run along its usual route via Balasore, after both Up and Down lines at the accident site were restored before midnight. “The train left Howrah last night but its link train from Chennai hasn’t arrived. So, we can run it today,” an SER official said.
SER’s CPRO Aditya Kumar Chaudhary said, “Services of many trains, including Coromandel, couldn’t be started as several rakes are stuck at various stations. Even as services of many trains were restored from Sunday night and Monday morning, many had to be cancelled because the link rakes were unavailable. Throughout the day, we have been trying to streamline the rake management system so normal services are restored soon as possible.”
The RMS has gone haywire because of short-termination and short-origination of trains. As a fallout, several trains couldn’t make it to their departure stations on Monday and were cancelled.
Officials said more than 40 trains, including freight cars, passed through the Howrah-Chennai route, including Howrah-Puri Vande Bharat, Falaknuma Express, Dhauli Express and East-Coast Express. For the third consecutive day, trains to Puri — the 22202 Sealdah-Puri Duronto Express, the 12277 Howrah-Puri Shatabdi Express, the 18409 Shalimar-Puri Jagannath Express and the 12821 Shalimar-Puri Dha-uli Express remained cancelled. Several trains to Chennai, Hyderabad and Se-cunderabad were also cancelled.
