KOLKATA: The Biswa Bangla crossing in New Town is set to get the city’s first multi-tier underpass for vehicles and pedestrians. The tunnelling work commenced on Saturday and bikes and cars are likely to be rolling along the underground passageway by the end of this year.
The West Bengal Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation is building a 320metre east-west tunnel for this. Through this tunnel, light motor vehicles will be able to cross the New Town Main Arterial Road at Biswa Bangla Gate – 4.2 metres below ground level. The pedestrian subway will be constructed under that, around 8metres below the thoroughfare.
The four-lane underpass will be 7 metres wide. The estimated cost for the project is Rs 68 crore.
Large vehicles and buses will, however, will continue to use the road above.
“It’s a unique project to decongest traffic at the crossing and also to ensure safe movement of pedestrians. Work has already begun and we are striving to finish it at the earliest,” said HIDCO chairman Debasis Sen.
The city has a few underpasses, such as the Patipukur underpass in Dum Dum, but they are all roads built under railway lines. “This is the first time a tunnel for vehicles is being constructed below a busy road,” said a senior state transport department official.
“It’s an integrated project which will be completed in phases. The groundwork has been in progress for quite some time but the traffic was blocked for the project from this week and we have deployed adequate manpower to finish the work before the deadline,” said Partho Mukhopadhyay, director of Mukherjee Associates Infra Ltd, which has bagged the contract.
TOI found the construction site being cordoned off by Bidhannagar Police with guardrails and traffic tapes and workers clearing the middle portion of the road.
Diversion notice for smooth traffic flow
With the Biswa Bangla crossing set for a multi-tier underpass for vehicles and pedestrians, a senior officer of Bidhannagar Police’s traffic department said they have issued a diversion notice for smooth flow of vehicular traffic. Parts of New Tow Main Arterial Road near the crossing have also been widened by dismantling an old traffic kiosk and some other installations for better traffic flow.
“Smaller vehicles coming from Eco Park and willing to take right turn to New Town bus stand are stopped 20 metres ahead of the designated crossing and channelised along the road near Pride Hotel. Large vehicles are allowed to move straight to the widened portion. While those vehicles that will move between east and west directions will be routed along service roads,” said a senior officer of Bidhannagar City Police.
