PUNE: A computer engineer (35) was arrested on Monday after he told his landlord in the morning that he had killed his wife (31), a master’s degree holder in computer science, following a quarrel in the night in their house in Phursungi.

“Rajendra Bhausaheb Gaikwad, who holds a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering and works with an IT company in Hinjewadi, slit the throat of his wife, Jyoti, with a kitchen knife. It has been recovered from the scene of crime,” said inspector (crime) Digamber Shinde of the Hadapsar police.
A police team rushed to the three-storied building at Gurdwara Colony of Ganganagar in Phursungi on being informed about the incident by the landlord. “We found Jyoti lying motionless in the bedroom with blood stains all around the place. We took Rajendra into custody and handed over the custody of the couple’s five-month-old daughter to Jyoti’s sister, who stays in Pune. Jyoti had resigned from a software major in Kharadi barely three days back,” Shinde said.
Rajendra hails from Madagi village in Deglur taluka of Nanded district, while Jyoti belonged to a family from the Cidco Colony in Nanded. The couple got married in Nanded on November 20, 2020. Rajendra and Jyoti had moved to Phursungi after securing jobs in IT companies in the city.

Jyoti had delivered a baby girl on June 27 in Nanded and returned to her Pune home on Sunday, Shinde said.
Jyoti’s sister, Gangasagar Kshirsagar (31), who stays in Pashan, lodged a complaint, naming Rajendra and his brother as responsible for Jyoti’s death. “We have booked Rajendra’s brother based on the complaint and are verifying his role in the matter,” the police inspector said.
He said, “Kshirsagar has alleged in her complaint that Rajendra was constantly harassing Jyoti for the past six months suspecting her of infidelity for delivering a baby girl and disowning the child’s fatherhood. He would insist that Jyoti should hand over her monthly salary to him. Kshirsagar also accused Rajendra of demanding dowry and accused his brother of harassing Jyoti and demanding Rs50,000 to let her stay with her husband.”
Kshirsagar told TOI at the police station, “After Jyoti had complained about physical and mental harassment, our relatives held five meetings with my brother in-law, Rajendra, and counselled him against harassing Jyoti over trivial issues, but he continued to torture her. We held the sixth meeting with Rajendra on Sunday and appealed him to stay together and live a happy married life, but all that is now in vain.”
She said, “I learnt about Jyoti’s death when I received a call from the landlord around 7.45am. I rushed to her residence and found her lying in a pool of blood. My sister had not filed any complaints against her husband with the police, NGOs, social service organisation and the state women’s commission in the past as she felt that he would improve his behaviour and things would be sorted out like it happens with other couples. She quit her job to take care of her child.”
Inspector Shinde said the victim’s post-mortem was performed at the Sassoon General Hospital. Its report is awaited. Jyoti’s family members have taken her body to Nanded for performing last rites.
