MANGALURU: With the KPCC releasing the first list of candidates on Saturday, the party has confirmed tickets for eight aspirants, out of the 13 assembly constituencies in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts.
The selected candidates are former ministers B Ramanath Rai (Bantwal), UT Khader (Mangaluru), Vinay Kumar Sorake (Kaup), Youth Congress leader Mithun Rai (Mulki-Moodbidri), Rakshith Shivaram (Belthangady), M Dinesh Hegde (Kundapur), K Gopal Poojari (Byndoor) and Krishnappa G (Sullia). The party is yet to finalise candidates for Puttur, Mangaluru City South, Mangaluru City North, Karkala and Udupi constituencies.
The 39-year-old Rakshith Shivaram, son of retired ACP (Bengaluru) BK Shivaram and Latha Shivaram, is an LLB graduate. Hailing from Belthangady, Rakshith has done his schooling and college education in Bengaluru, and was practicing as an advocate in the high court. He is a KPCC general secretary, and is active in social and religious activities. Rakshith will be contesting for the first time from the Belthangady constituency.
G Krishnappa,59, an MSc and MA degree holder, is a businessman and social worker. Hailing from Ramanagara in Ramakunja village of Kadaba taluk. Krishnappa will be contesting for the first time from the Sullia constituency, which is reserved for SCs. Krishnappa, who became a member of the KPCC in 2007, has worked for the party in various capacities.
Mithun Rai, who contested the Lok Sabha election from Dakshina Kannada in 2019 and lost to BJP state president Nalin Kumar Kateel, is contesting the assembly polls for the first time. Rai was the former president of the Dakshina Kannada District Youth Congress, and is a close associate of KPCC president DK Shivakumar.
Another new face of the Congress is 51-year-old Molahalli Dinesh Hegde, who will be contesting from the Kundapur constituency in Udupi. A contractor by profession, Hegde has worked as the president of the Molahalli gram panchayat in Kundapur taluk.
Ramanath Rai is all set to contest as Congress candidate from Bantwal for the ninth time. Of the eight elections he contested, Rai had become MLA six times in 1985, 1989, 1994, 1999, 2008 and 2013. He had tasted defeat in 2004 and 2018 against the BJP.
