KALYAN: Police probing the firing on contractor Umesh Salunkhe in Titwala have revealed that the contractor got injured by misfiring when his friend was checking an illegal revolver, and he cooked up the firing story to save his friend and himself from legal actions.
After the revelation, police searched Salunkhe’s residence in Titwala and found a huge number of illegal arms. The seized weapons include three revolvers, 13 live cartridges, 8 swords and 2 choppers. A separate FIR has been filed against Salunkhe under the Arms Act. Police said they are waiting for Salunkhe’s discharge from hospital to enquire about the firing incident and also from where he purchased the illegal arms.
Salunkhe, an electrical department contractor, has multiple cases registered against him in Thane and Palghar. He had initially claimed that on Sunday night, when he was standing near his house, unknown persons fired on him and fled.
However, after registering an FIR, when the Kalyan taluka police began probe, they seized CCTV footage from the spot. In the footage, Salunkhe can be seen sitting with his friend Santosh Shinde (who is on the run) and Lakhan Singh, who was arrested on Monday. Shinde is seen checking the revolver when it misfires and the bullet hits Sanlunkhe on the chest. An investigator said prima facie it seems that since revolver used in crime was illegal, Salunkhe cooked up a false story of firing.
“Truth will come out once Salunkhe is discharged from hospital and Shinde is arrested,” said inspector Jitendra Thakur.
