PUNE: Constable Sachin Jagdale (38) was administered six stitches on his right cheek after a man assaulted him with a knife at Dhanori octroi post at 2.55am on Sunday.
Jagdale, who is with the Airport police, was on patrolling duty along with his colleague.
Senior inspector Vilas Sonde of the Airport police told TOI, “Jagdale
spotted a roadside eatery open and told the operator to shut it down. The eatery operator obeyed and when a man walked down to the area and demanded food he told him it was shut on the orders of the police.”
The man picked up a knife from the eatery and assaulted Jagdale on his cheek. “The other constable was near the motorcycle,” Sonde added.
Jagdale was bleeding profusely and his colleague took him to a private hospital where he was treated. He lodged a complaint that afternoon.
“The man ran away but we know he is from Tuljapur in Osmanabad district. He moves from one railway station to another. He begs and sometimes picks pockets. A search is on,” he said.
