BENGALURU: Amid concerns over the likely delay in the onset of monsoon across Karnataka, experts at India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bengaluru are keeping their fingers crossed on the depression forming over the southeast part of Arabian Sea, which is likely to turn into a major cyclonic storm.
The storm, likely to be christened Biparjoy (disaster), is expected to result in moderate to heavy rain over the next 4-5 days in and around Bengaluru as well as coastal Karnataka.
A Prasad, scientist at IMD, said: “Currently, the depression is located off the coast of Goa. It’s likely to move towards the north and intensify into a cyclonic storm over east-central Arabian Sea and adjoining southeastern parts over the next 24 hours.”
But IMD officials are worried that pre-monsoon cyclones could either speed up or delay the onset of monsoon over Karnataka. “We have to wait and watch the wind direction,” another senior IMD official said. But with increased temperatures, the relative humidity index across Bengaluru is likely to be around 83%, giving the effect of a heat cauldron.
IMD officials said over the next 48 hours, Bengaluru is likely to witness light to moderate pre-monsoon showers in isolated areas along with thunderstorms and lightning. “The city may experience widespread rain on June 9-10. Even though we have sounded yellow alert (heavy rain) for coastal Karnataka and some south-interior districts, including Kolar and Tumakuru, there is not much threat when it comes to Bengaluru at this juncture,” IMD officials said.
