KOLKATA: Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday questioned the fate of several hundreds whose jobs were being terminated based on the Calcutta High Court’s orders in the school cash-for-job scam and said while strong action should be taken against the corrupt, “those who have made a mistake” could at least be “given another chance”.
“Even yesterday, two people died by suicide. A marriage broke down. They (those who lost jobs) have got married and are taking care of their parents. If they are dismissed what will they eat? What will their children eat?” an emotional Banerjee said.
“I am not saying that do not take action against those involved in corruption. Take strong action against them. I have no forgiveness for them. But others should not be victimised. Give them back their jobs legally. If they have done anything wrong as per law, give them a second chance. If needed, they may sit for an examination again. There can be a separate arrangement as decided by the court and we can arrange for it,” she added.
In favour of genuine rights, says Mamata
Speaking on the school cash-for-job scam, CM Mamata Banerjee referred to Justice Ashok Ganguly’s verdict in a case involving jobs during the Left rule and pointed out that the judge did not talk about taking away people’s jobs but said “correct it if there is some discrepancy”.
“But nowadays within moments, thousands of jobs and appointments get cancelled,” she said and added, “We are all dependent on the law and the ones safeguarding it. We have immense respect for the decision of the judges. I do not endorse snatching of rights. I am in favour of upholding the rights of people, that are genuine and as per the law. If anyone has done anything wrong then I will act. I will stand for justice and act against any injustice.”
The CM said not all those who had lost jobs were Trinamool cadres and added that if someone from the lower ranks of the government was involved in any kind of corruption, even if he or she belonged to her own party, that persons would be punished.
Targeting “politically interested litigations” (PILs), the CM lashed out at the CPM (the party’s Rajya Sabha MP Bikash Bhattacharya is arguing in the case) and said, “If I have done anything wrong, slap me. I will not mind if I am guilty. But I did not take away the job of a single CPM cadre. Then why are you doing it, when you do not have the capacity to provide jobs?” Referring to the state finance crunch, the CM said, “We had been able to repay much of the loans of the Left regime. As per the 6th state pay commission recommendations, we had released the DA too and it is now 105%, which was 33% during the CPM rule.”
