MUMBAI: Textbooks divided into four parts with blank pages after each chapter for class 3 to 8 students of government and aided schools in the state, will start rolling out in the second week of June. The syllabus remains unchanged.
The two to three blank pages after each lesson are being introduced as a pilot project in the upcoming academic year 2023-24 with the aim to reduce the weight of school bags. In March the state issued a government circular to bring in text-cum-note books for students upto class 10. However, following criticism from educationists, it was decided to have textbooks with blank sheets only up-to class 8. The state obtained data on the number of free text-cum-note books to be printed by Balbharati, the State Bureau of Textbook Production and Curriculum Research. Private book sellers and educational institutions were also asked to submit their requirements.
The first quarter text-cum-note books will be transported to Balbharati’s nine distribution centres, including Goregaon, before sending it to government schools. Printing and distribution of the other three parts will be done in a phased manner. Schools reopen on June 15.
While the state overlooked teachers request to revisit its decision as a few blank pages will not reduce the burden of school bags, what has surprised them is the logo of Balbharati superimposed on the sheets. “The textbook carries the Balbharati logo. To have it on the blank sheets which are attached to the textbooks makes little sense,” said a teacher of an aided primary school.
While the text-cum-note books will be provided free to government and aided school students, it will carry a higher price in the open market. Parents of private schools said that sellers are not ready to sell textbooks printed in the previous year and are insisting on buying the new ones which will hit the market early June. “The textbooks printed last year are available in shops. But sellers are asking us buy the fresh textbooks,” said a parent whose child has gone to class 4.
Parents said they are being made to believe that the content in the text-cum-note books has also changed. An education official said that the text-cum-note books will make it to the open market for private schools but parents can buy previous years textbooks if stocks are available. The blank sheets are for jotting down important points discussed by teachers in class. For classwork and homework students will continue to use separate notebooks. For class 1 and 2 students all subjects will be integrated into a textbook in each quarter and blank sheets will be attached only where needed.
