Ghaziabad: The officials of Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) and Ghaziabad municipal corporation are yet to take a call on who will take care of the infrastructure work of Bandha Road, which connects Karhera rotary to Hapur Chungi. The four-laned road was handed over to the municipal corporation in September.

The eight-kilometre road is a major stretch for daily as well as long-distance commuters as it further connects to the 10.3-km Hindon Elevated Road, which has also been handed over to the corporation in September. A copy of the handover document is available with HT.

According to officials, the Hindon Elevated Road witnesses a daily passenger car unit movement of about 40,000 vehicles and a majority of these also use the Bandha Road, which passes through Raj Nagar Extension and connects further to the Delhi-Meerut Road and Hapur Chungi intersection.

The Hapur Chungi intersection further connects commuters to the National Highway (NH) 9. The stretch from the Delhi-Meerut Road intersection to Hapur Chungi has localities such as Raj Nagar, Sanjay Nagar and Kamla Nehru Nagar in its vicinity. There are also many Central government institutes such as the CBI Academy and a campus of the National Disaster Response Force located at this stretch.

“As part of the infrastructure work on Bandha Road, there was a proposal to shut down 10 road exits and the development of six U-turns. Besides, the height of the new divider was to be raised to about two feet. The entire project cost is about 3 crore. The authority floated tenders for the purpose before the handover in September. Now, we are proposing that we will share the funds with the corporation and they can execute the plan as they have been given the jurisdiction of Bandha Road,” said Rakesh Kumar Gupta, GDA chief engineer.

The corporation officials, however, disagree with the proposal given by the GDA.

“The handover document clearly mentions that the road infrastructure work will be carried out by the GDA. So, they must speed up the process and complete the work at the earliest for the benefit of daily commuters,” said NK Chaudhary, chief engineer, Ghaziabad municipal corporation.

Meanwhile, residents said that they will continue to face traffic congestion till the infrastructure improvement plan is put in place.

“There have been repeated demands by Raj Nagar Extension residents to decongest the Bandha Road as thousands of commuters get stuck in peak hour traffic jams. The problem of too many exits and absence of proper u-turns further compound our problems. Long-distance commuters who come from Delhi via the Hindon Elevated Road also get stuck on Bandha Road,” said Vikrant Sharma, a Raj Nagar Extension resident.
