KOLKATA: The police have arrested a domestic help, who was working for the past decade at the residence of a woman, for allegedly stealing Rs 30,000 from the flat in the Rashbehari area. The woman works at a private firm and lives on her own. Her children are settled abroad.
“The accused looked after the house for most of the day. During questioning, she claimed she could not stop herself from lifting the money kept inside an unlocked drawer. By the time we took up the probe, the accused had fled and had switched off her mobile phone after she was called up by the victim. We checked CCTV footage and found she did not walk towards Rashbehari crossing, her usual route, to her supposed rented flat in Chetla. Instead, she walked towards Golpark and then, to Ballygunge station, where she boarded a train to Baruipur. We used local sources and arrested her,” said an investigating officer. The accused has been sent to police custody for 10 days.
Police said such a crime by a help of long time was not common, but had been taking place intermittently since the pandemic. Cops have recently issued an advisory saying one is vulnerable to thefts even when inside the house as much as when the house is under lock and key. “A few simple steps need to be followed to stop chances of becoming victims of such crimes. This includes locking the almirahs, getting the servants verified and avoiding financial discussions in front of them. One primary objective will be to hire only from trusted agencies, one which comes with recommendations from across several quarters,” said a senior officer from the anti-burglary section at Lalbazar as a general advisory.
