The Udham Singh Nagar police on Wednesday held a coordination with the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and Nepal forces in this regard.

“We pasted Amritpal and his associates’ posters in villages along the border and handed them over to Nepali forces. We have also organised meetings in the villages for assistance. Since our border with Nepal is open, we along with SSB, have to be extra cautious,” said Ravinder Singh Bisht, station house officer (SHO), Jhankaiyan police station.

“We have intensified patrolling and checking of vehicles in the areas bordering Nepal,” he added.

He said that the police are keeping an eye on persons found inclined towards the Khalistani cause in the past and the social media accounts of hundreds of people are also being monitored.

According to the police headquarters, a strict vigil is being kept by the police and intelligence department in the Udham Singh Nagar district of the state.

Udham Singh Nagar police recently booked a 30-year-old man for allegedly uploading a social media post in support of absconding Waris Punjab De chief, a police officer said.

The accused, identified as Gurwinder Singh alias Bobby, a resident of village Daduwala, allegedly posted on his Facebook in Gurmukhi, “If brother Amritpal Singh is arrested, then understand that the government is inviting Sikhs for a war.” The police said that the accused instigated people to “block roads of their respective areas to stop police from arresting him (Amritpal).”

The post went viral on social media and had been widely shared and liked by users, police stated.

“The post created a feeling of disharmony, enmity and hatred among the people, and gave a boost to the morale of the supporters of Khalistan,” it said.

A case was registered against him under sections 153 B (1) (C) and 505 (2) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Kunda police station against the accused on March 19 late evening.

According to senior officials in Uttarakhand, five companies of Paramilitary Force and an Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) have also been deployed in the district to nab Singh and his associates.

The Udham Singh Nagar district in the state is dominated by the Sikh community. They originally migrated here from Pakistan at the time of separation. During the 80s and 90s, when terrorism was at its peak in Punjab, many from Punjab took shelter here.

Meanwhile, the Punjab government on Thursday extended the suspension of mobile internet and SMS services in Tarn Taran and Ferozepur districts till Friday noon while lifting the curbs in Moga, Sangrur, Ajnala sub-division in Amritsar and a few areas in Mohali.

The police crackdown came almost over three weeks after Amritpal’s supporters clashed with uniformed personnel at the Ajnala police station on February 23 on the outskirts of Amritsar, demanding the release of one of Amritpal’s close aides, Lovepreet Toofan.
