BENGALURU: A 33-year-old civil contractor, who was working in a BBMP drain, was killed after he came under the compound wall of Indian Institute of Science (IISc) that crashed on CV Raman Road around 3am on Wednesday.
The wall crashed after a huge tree inside the campus got uprooted and fell on it, said police.
The contractor, B Vasant, a resident of Anekal, was accompanied by Gopi, the driver of a earthmover machine. Vasant had got into the drain, dug up close to the compound wall, when the mishap took place, said police.
“The tree was uprooted and a major portion of it landed on the compound wall. The wall fell on Vasant, who was working next to it. Gopi immediately jumped out of his vehicle, cleared the debris and pulled out Vasant. But Vasant had sustained serious head and spinal cord injuries and died instantly,” said police.
Vasant, a bachelor, had undertaken the sub-contract of the drain work, said police. “Two labourers were supposed to arrive at the work spot by 1am. But they did not turn up. Saying that it’s better that they themselves do the work, Nagesh directed Gopi to dig the earth and got into the drain to guide him,” police added.
Vasant’s younger brother B Nagesh, also a civil contractor, who filed a complaint with jurisdictional police from Yeshwantpur, termed the death unnatural. “If someone had assigned the work to Vasant, then such persons could have been booked for the death under IPC 304A (causing death due to negligence). But here Vasant himself is the contractor and moreover, nothing would have happened had the tree not fallen on the compound wall,” an investigating officer said.
BBMP chief commissioner Tushar Giri Nath told mediapersons that IISc should pay Rs 5 lakh as compensation to the kin of the deceased. He said zonal commissioner and engineers visited the spot and found that the wall had collapsed due to the tree fall. It was an unfortunate accident, he said.
Prof Kaushal Verma, chair, office of communication, IISc, told TOI: “There is no official comment at this juncture.”
