KOLKATA: Presidency University students have written to the dean of students, Arun Kumar Maiti, urging the authorities to focus on students’ mental health. The move came after a mathematics MSc student of the university died by suicide at his home in Bankura earlier this month.
Debayudh Sanyal, a postgraduate student and a member of Sangharsh, Presidency Unit, said they submitted the letter to Maiti as mental health issues were an emerging concern among students. “We should have more counsellors so that regular counselling sessions can be held to tackle problems. At present, sessions are held once or twice a week and there is only one counsellor,” Sanyal added.
Arpan Maji, an undergraduate student, felt awareness programmes should be intensified on the campus as many students did not even know about counselling sessions being held on the campus, where they could seek help.
“The authorities should conduct seminars on mental health once a month so students are aware of the issue and know when to seek help,” Maji said. Presidency dean of students Maiti said the institute held counselling sessions and also organised awareness campaigns.
But, an official pointed out, those counselling sessions and awareness campaigns were not enough to address the problem. “Teachers should take initiatives to mentor students so that they feel comfortable to share their problems, be it academic or personal, with them,” said the official.
