Jaikishan Singh Rori, a two-time MLA from Garhshankar, was unanimously elected as the deputy speaker of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha on Thursday.
Rori’s name for the post was proposed by fellow Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislator Baljinder Kaur and seconded by finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema.
After the election, chief minister Bhagwant Mann congratulated him and escorted him to the deputy speaker’s chair in the House. Mann said that Rori is an honest politician who comes from a humble family. The CM said he hoped that the deputy speaker would play a neutral role and give equal time to all MLAs without any bias.

A 22-year-old man who ran a call centre, first in Indore and later in Chandigarh, which allegedly duped more than 1,000 US citizens of their savings was arrested from Punjab on Tuesday, a senior police officer said in Indore on Thursday. This is the second time that Karan Bhatt, a class 12 pass out from Gujarat’s Ahmedabad, has been arrested for conning US nationals, Indore’s deputy commissioner of police Nimish Agrawal said.

Celebrations erupted across Maharashtra after rebel Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde was named the new chief minister of the state. He will take oath at Raj Bhavan at 7:30 pm tonight. BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis will join the government as the deputy CM, union home minister Amit Shah said. ‘Shinde tum aage bado, hum tumhare sath hai,’ (Shinde you move ahead, we are with you) slogans can be heard amid sloganeering outside Vidhan Bhavan.
