BENGALURU: One of the eligibility criteria prescribed for the integrated MSc Economics programme of Dr BR Ambedkar School of Economics (BASE) has left several aspirants in Karnataka in the lurch.
The requirement that the aspirants must have done a compulsory core maths component at PU/class 12 level makes PU arts and commerce students ineligible for the course, they point out.
Envisioned on the lines of London School of Economics, BASE offers a five-year integrated MSc economic programme. The candidates should have completed II PU/class 12/ equivalent exam with English as one of the languages and maths as a core subject, and obtained a minimum of 65% marks in aggregate (60% for SC/ST students).
As per the mandate of the department of PU education, maths is not offered to non-science students. Instead, they get to study Basic Maths. So arts and commerce stream students are not eligible to apply. At the same time, their counterparts in CBSE or ICSE schools have the benefit as they get to choose the subject between streams. “This is a tricky situation as arts and commerce students are usually the biggest aspirants for an economics programme. And here they are, unable to apply for the most coveted programme of BASE. BASE should relax the criterion for this year and the department of PU education should offer flexibility to the students,” said a PU economics professor from Kolar.
“We are ushering in NEP and speaking of flexibility. But PU streams are water-tight. It is unfair that a commerce or arts student cannot even apply for an economics programme,” said a parent.
Prof NR Bhanumurthy, vice-chancellor of BASE, said the PU department should ensure flexibility. “The eligibility criteria for the programmes have been decided by the board of governors. We have kept core maths as part of the eligibility criteria so as to maintain the standards of the programme. Maths is an integral part of our syllabus. If we take it off, then the programme becomes one offered by just another college,” he said.
