MANGALURU: A flex that was put up at the Surathkal junction in the city naming the place after Veer Savarkar was removed on Sunday, following complaints.
The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) council had approved a proposal, mooted by Mangaluru City North MLA Dr Y Bharath Shetty, to name the circle at Surathkal in the Mangaluru City North constituency as “Veer Savarkar Circle”. A council meeting held in October 2021 had approved and referred the proposal to the MCC’s Standing Committee on Town Planning and the same is awaiting a government nod.
Though the circle was not officially named after Veer Savarkar, a flex with a picture of Savarkar was found on Sunday. Irked over this, Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) members brought the issue to the notice of Surathkal police. The SDPI members also warned of protests.
Meanwhile, the police informed the SDPI members that the issue is pertaining to the city corporation. Following this, the SDPI members contacted the MCC authorities and requested the city corporation to remove the flex. Since the proposal to name the circle after Veer Savarkar has not yet been approved by the government, the MCC authorities removed the flex.
When contacted, MCC commissioner Akshy Sridhar said that the MCC council has already approved the proposal to name the circle after Veer Savarkar. “Since the process to name the circle is yet to be completed, we have removed the flex,” he added.
