Sources said the breach occurred at Mamata Banerjee’s Kalighat residence in the wee hours of Sunday

KOLKATA: Kolkata Police commissioner Vineet Goyal on Sunday ordered a probe after a middle-aged person breached multiple-security layers and was found sleeping outside CM Mamata Banerjee‘s home at 1am.
The person, whom police did not identify, is being questioned by agencies but it is learnt that he is speaking incoherently and may not be mentally stable.
CP Goyal this morning went to CM Banerjee’s Kalighat residence to probe how a person could sneak in through multiple security cordons. CM Banerjee is a Z-plus protectee and security around her home was stepped up in February 2021 after some protesters reached her home crossing the Adi Ganga adjacent to it.
“On Sunday, an incident of security breach was reported at West Bengal CM’s residence. One person somehow had sneaked into the CM residence complex with mischievous intention. Later his presence was discovered by the security personnel and he was intercepted and handed over to Kalighat police station. CM Security and Law Enforcement Agencies have taken serious cognisance of it. Further probe is underway. Immediate steps are being taken to further enhance security in and around CM residence,” said joint CP (crime) Murlidhar Sharma.
Sources claimed the breach occurred at Banerjee’s Kalighat residence in the wee hours of Sunday around 1am. The man, whom sources claimed was mentally disturbed and hails from Basirhat in North 24 Parganas, was spotted near the CM residence garage by men posted in CM’s security only a few hours later. This is the third time such a breach has been reported in the past two years.
Sources claimed the man had climbed a wall, crossed over and sat through the night. They stated that responsibilities for the breach is being fixed, after taking all possible technical help. Till reports last came in, the detained person was being interrogated and was not arrested.
A preliminary probe report has been sent to the highest quarters for security review. However, the police have not ruled out other angles.
“A comprehensive security upgrade is on the cards. Last time, after some para teachers used the canal to try and gain entry in February last year, we had to step up security on the canal side. We will see where this breach took place,” claimed a source.
None of the other senior officers agreed to speak on the incident. DCP (south) Akash Magharia disconnected all calls. Joint CP (headquarters) Subhankar Sinha Sarkar said the DCP (south) will respond to queries.
