KOLKATA: Kolkatans woke up to an overcast sky on Tuesday, when it rained in multiple spells in the morning as well as evening. The sky is pedicted to remain gloomy on Wednesday as well and the city is expected to receive light to moderate rain for the second day in a row.
Apart from Kolkata, several south Bengal districts were lashed by thunderstorm. “Currently, a monsoon trough is passing through our region over Bankura, Diamond Harbour, East-Southeast towards Northeast Bay of Bengal. This, combined with a cyclonic circulation over the Northeast Bay and adjoining areas, is causing the current thunderstorm,” said Sanjib Bandyopadhyay, deputy director general of Meteorology at Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) Kolkata.
While the cloud cover and the intermittent showers kept the mercury at normal mark on Tuesday, the day temperature might climb up slightly on Wednesday, when the Met expects lesser intensity of rain.
Kolkata and parts of south Bengal are facing a rainfall deficit, with the city recording a seasonal shortfall of 36%. Even a week ago, the deficit for Kolkata was 41%. “Since we are expecting moderate rain in the city on Wednesday too, the percentage of seasonal rainfall deficit should come down further in the next two days,” said G K Das, director (weather) at RMC Kolkata.
Neighbouring North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly and other south Bengal districts received a good amount of rainfall on Tuesday. The Met office expects heavier downpour in Bankura, Purulia and Jhargram on Wednesday.
