KOLKATA: Despite favourable conditions for repeated spells of thunderstorms and overcast skies until Wednesday, the weather is likely to remain sunny and rainless till Tuesday evening, by which time the conditions will be favourable for the formation of a nor’wester to strike the city, weathermen said on Monday.
Intermittent showers are likely though, said the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC). The formation of a trough stretching from southwest Rajasthan to Kutch approaching the general direction of Bengal has made Kolkata and nine other districts in the northern and southern parts of the state prone to thunderstorms since March 15.
However, the northward movement of the trough since Monday morning has considerably reduced the chance of rain in Kolkata and neighbouring southern districts.
Bengal’s northern districts, however, continue to receive thunderstorms, with districts like South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore put on orange alert by the India Meteorological Department with the prediction of gusty winds of 50kmph to 60kmph.
G K Das, RMC director, said the weather conditions in Kolkata are likely to remain favourable for thunderstorms till Wednesday. A third nor’wester since last Thursday may also take place by Tuesday evening.
The shower may last between half-an-hour to an hour, with the nor’wester lasting for over a minute.
On Monday, the maximum temperature was 26.8°C while the minimum temperature dropped to 20.6°C. There were scattered light showers in central and south Kolkata in the morning.
On Tuesday, the maximum temperature is likely to rise to 28°C and the minimum may be around 21°C, said Met office sources.
