KOLKATA: KMC is likely to float the tender this month for the purchase of 32 machines, a modified version of smoke-meters, to be used to measure air pollution by vehicles.
TOI had earlier reported about the plan to buy the advanced pollution monitors after studies by multiple agencies and researchers found technical evaluation could check pollution at the source.
A KMC official said the new devices could measure pollution levels of petrol, diesel as well as CNG vehicles. “For now, each of the 25 traffic guards will get one machine and seven devices will go to the anti-pollution cell,” said a Lalbazar officer. Confirming the development, DC Traffic (II) Amit Nath said the machines would allow testing on a wider range of vehicles.
The pollution-monitoring machines currently available with traffic police are BS IV-level compliant, though BS-VI vehicles have started plying here. “We need machines that can be used on BS-VI vehicles, including buses. The devices we have now can be used only on older taxis and buses,” said an officer.
After an initial drive, more new machines might be bought later, a police officer said. “The plan is to provide each guard with one machine. But we are also thinking of extending it to the AP Cell and Special Raids section,” an officer said.
