Yakuza Princess trailer

Visceral, bloody revenge thriller starring MASUMI and Johnathan Rhys Meyers in the style of LADY SNOWBLOOD. A masterful, atmospheric movie that weaves a great, classic story through a revenge slaughter fest of baddies. It is hard core action for martial artists with plenty of spouting blood captured with superb cinematography, cool sound mix, atmospheric locations, great script, awesome acting, in a revenge clash of honour and betrayal, cut through with a mysterious, blood thirsty, Muramasa sword. There’s even a fight scene with an homage to Bruce Lee’s Game of Death yellow jumpsuit!!!

MASUMI as AKEMI the Yakuza Princess

Almost Lady Snow Blood Returns… Yakuza Princess, the visceral revenge thriller chronicling a young warrior’s return home, arrives on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-Ray, DVD and On Demand on November 16 from Magnolia Home Entertainment under the Magnet Label. Led by a dynamic performance by MASUMI, her feature debut follows the tale of an orphan named Akemi as she discovers she’s the rightful heir to the infamous Yakuza crime syndicate.

After learning that she is the heiress to half of one of the most notorious crime organizations in Sao Paulo, Brazil, the young orphan sets out with one goal in mind: reclaim the throne that is rightfully hers. Accompanied by a wayward ronin with amnesia, played by Johnathan Rhys Meyers (“The Tudors”), Akemi’s story is infused with emotion and bloody action as she fights those who stand in her way. With violent action, katana-slicing stunts and an emotional throughline that propels Akemi to claim what’s hers by any means necessary, Yakuza Princess emerges as one of the best and bloody action experiences of the year.

MASUMI/ AKEMI Lead Actress Interview

We caught up with MASUMI the outstanding actress who brings the layered character of Akemi to life taking her from a humdrum shop girl life to sudden bloody immersion in an ultra violent Yakuza world that is determined to slaughter her.

WoMA: As an established musician how did you switch from music to acting, are the levels of performance similar or wildly different? Is it a different internal process to get into character?

MASUMI: I never really switched, I am a musician still, a singer songwriter, I just decided to take some acting classes for a few months then that’s when I got the role for Yakuza Princess so everything is very much new to me.

WoMA: How did you find your way into the lead role, going from bored kiosk worker, lost orphan, girl about town to full on avenging angel?

MASUMI: I usually go to a space by myself in a quiet area to focus and I’m usually there mentally and then I’m good to go.

WoMA: Did any Martial arts Movies have any impact on you?

MASUMI: I watched an actress name Kaji Meiko, she is Lady Snowblood. I love that film everything is so graceful and yeah that was the one that I watched the most.

WoMA: Wow, Lady Snowblood is a superb, classic film, very powerful inspiration.

WoMA: What do you channel to create the intensity of your role and also do the moves?

MASUMI: That’s a complicated question. Anything pointy was always very scary to me, I guess you would call it a phobia for anything sharp, so even doing rehearsals, to pretend to cut somebody with a plastic knife or whatever I still felt uncomfortable. So I had to create a symbolic meaning behind it which for me was survival.

WoMA: The martial arts action is brutal was that difficult to capture? How did you find the process of filming?

MASUMI: I didn’t know that you had to take the scene over and over again. I had no idea, so, for example, the first day I shot it was the crying scene, I am in front of my grandpa’s shrine and I cry. That was the first thing that we ever shot and I had no idea that would be first and I’ve never shot in front of people… there were so many people watching, so, I just learnt as I went.

WoMA: What is your Martial arts background? How did you train for the fight scenes?

MASUMI: Well actually my husband had to train me in the very basics first, my footing, and stances for everything. He helped me with the stunt guys moves, with swords, with martial arts, he helped me with everything.

WoMA: What was it like working and acting with Johnathan Rhys Meyers?

MASUMI: It was amazing, I mean I really got along with him. From the first day I met him he said that he was going to support me and he did just that. He guided me through the scenes, he taught me how to move with the camera. I’m really grateful to him that I had such a great time and I would love to work with again.

WoMA: Would you like to make a sequel? Is there anything you might add to the character in a sequel?

MASUMI: Yeah I definitely would like to do a sequel. It would be fun working with everybody and I think if we were to do a sequel I’m guessing that it will probably be in Japan which will be another side of Akemi because her Japanese side will have to come out more.
