Residents of Shreeram Anugraha in the contested area of Chinchpada in Mumbai’s Kalyan East on Thursday woke up to the news of a leopard in their society since early morning, and two people have also reportedly been injured after the animal attacked, forest department officials said.

Rajiv Pandey, a 38-year-old teacher, suffered head injuries after the leopard attacked him while wandering from one building to another.

“Residents from our building saw the leopard jumping to the Anugraha tower around 8.30 am. They also tried to drive it away using a stick,” Anita Gangawane, 52, a resident of Om Guru Kurpa building said.

A team from the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) is expected to soon tranquilise the animal and release it in the wild.

“Our main aim is to rescue the leopard first. The injured are under treatment. There is no casualty as of now. After the rescue, we will figure out how the leopard entered the residential building. The entire team is working on the safety of the residents,” said Shrikant Raut, the forest officer at the spot.
