PUNE: The MahaMetro has reduced the frequency of trains on both the functional routes after a drop in footfall.
The trains will now run at a frequency of 30 minutes on the Garware College to Vanaz route, while on the PCMC to Phugewadi route, the trains will run at every one hour till afternoon and at a gap of 35 minutes till evening.

MahaMetro officials said after the launch of the service, the trains were running at a gap of 30 minutes. The frequency was increased in April and May up to 20 minutes on weekends but it was brought back to 30 minutes again.
About 5.36 lakh ridership was recorded in March, 2.23 lakh in April and 1.88 lakh in May.
“We have been modifying the frequency based on the response since these are initial months of the Metro services. The footfall was north bound soon after the launch, which prompted an increase in frequency. Some drop has been witnessed in the footfall,” said an official with the MahaMetro.
The footfall on the PCMC route has been less as compared to the Garware College-Vanaz section. Hence the frequency of the trains on the PCMC route has been brought down further.
The train operations begin at 8am on both the routes. On the Vanaz stretch, the trains run for 13 hours on weekdays and 14 hours on Saturdays and Sundays. On the PCMC route, the operations are scheduled for 13 hours on all days.
Hemant Sonawane, the general manager (PR) at MahaMetro, said, “Over 9.66 lakh commuters have travelled in Metro trains so far on both the routes, which include the ridership of 6.84 lakh recorded on the Vanaz route and 2.81 lakh on PCMC stretch”.
“We have provided a mobile app for commuters to get journey tickets apart from the counter sale at every station. The app and online tickets have received good responses from commuters. We will continue to run the trains at the changed frequency for the next few days to monitor the ridership,” he said.
The MahaMetro has said that a revenue of Rs1.4 crore has been generated from ticketing.
The two functional routes have five stations each. “Every station has been provided at least one access point, while works are underway to provide another entry-exit point,” an official with the MahaMetro said.
