The incident occurred in Kalamna village on November 6. The victim’s younger sister, 12, spilled the beans before police leading to the arrest of their father on Saturday. The victim was a Std IX student.
Police said that during interrogation, the accused said he had plotted his daughter’s murder after seeing some crime investigation series on television.
The man allegedly wanted to implicate his second wife and her family and asked his eldest daughter to pen a suicide note stating that she was taking the drastic step as her step-mother, her brother and their parents were harassing her.
The first wife of the accused had ended life by consuming poison in 2016.
The man also persuaded his daughter to mention that she was also being sexually exploited by her stepmother’s brother while his parents were pressuring her to get married, said police.
Police said the accused had woken up the girl and her younger sister at 3am and asked them to help him stage the fake suicide drama and capture it in cellphone.
The accused made his eldest daughter stand on a stool, wrap a rope around her neck with its one end tied to the ceiling. He also asked his daughter to take out her tongue and pose for the photos which her younger sister was made to click. Subsequently, he kicked the stool leading to the girl’s death, said police.
Cops suspected the man after realizing that he had deleted images in his cellphone. The crime came to fore after cops recovered the images, as per commissioner of police Amitesh Kumar who along with DCP Sandeep Pakhale and addl CP Navinchandra Reddy supervised the probe.
On the basis of a complaint filed by the man’s sister and the fake suicide note, Kalamna police had earlier arrested his second wife, her brother and their parents for rape, abetment to commit suicide and also slapped provisions of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012. They are now lodged in Nagpur central jail.
The man’s sister had further stated that his daughter had consumed poison and was admitted to Mayo hospital “where she had narrated her plight”.
“We were not convinced by the family’s reaction after the girl’s death. No one seemed to be upset. Moreover, images in the mobile phone of the father were found to be deleted,” said senior PI Vinod Patil of Kalamna police station.
The PI said the recovered images appeared to have been clicked in presence of Guddu, which seemed unusual.
CP Kumar said the four persons who were jailed in a fake offence would be released.
