MUMBAI: A court in Ahmednagar has convicted an electricity consumer and sentenced him to two years rigorous imprisonment for pilferage of power supplied by MSEDCL.
“In the past, the punishment was up upto a year. But this is perhaps the first time that a power thief in MSEDCL jurisdiction has been sent for two years in jail. This will send a strong message to others and create a huge deterrent,” said MSEDCL chief spokesperson Anil Kamble.
Said another MSEDCL official : “The consumer owned a food company in Ahmednagar district and was accused of pilfering electricity for over three months. When our squad checked the premises in Ahmednagar in November 2016, the officials found that over 34,000 units of electricity valued at Rs 4.20 lakh was pilfered. A FIR was subsequently registered when the accused failed to pay the money with penalty, amounting to nearly Rs 10 lakh.
A case was registered with MSCB police station and after seven years, the court pronounced the final order on Monday.
